The Voltaire Trading Company is a Kahvehn company. It is one of the oldest enterprises operating within the Cooperative Republic of Kahveh. The Company's logo represents this heritage taking the form of a crest with the motto Scientia vincere Tenebras ["Conquering darkness by science"] beneath.

The Voltaire Trading Company began as a state-run enterprise in the former Kingdom of Kahveh. Three years after the peaceful revolution that brought Zetetic Elench dam Kahveh to power in the new Cooperative Republic of Kahveh, it was privatised with Mr. Elench dam Kahveh as CEO. In theory, this is a purely ceremonial role as the Voltaire Trading Company is now an entity independent from the state. In practice, the VTC and the CRK maintain a close working relationship.
The enterprise expanded carefully with a broad range of economic activities, wherever possible seeking agreements with the President of a state to locate a number of corporations within the same state or empire. The purpose was to seek a mutually beneficial economic arrangement that would allow both parties to prosper.

Following the formation of the Democratic Cooperative Alliance, the Voltaire Trading Company expanded into Quarkstream and Tiberium. Following the acquisition of a number of corporations that were under administration (owned by Gamemaster Corporations) but nevertheless profitable, some of these were relocated to more amenable states following arrangements with Presidents.
In late-2559 the corporations that formed the Voltaire Trading Company portfolio underwent a re-branding exercise that brought most of the disparate areas of activity of individual corporations under the brand of one of eight core companies.
The newly formed core companies were Nexus Heavy Industries, Rättvisemärkt (Fairtrade Mark) Agriculture, Royal Kahvehn Chemical Corporation (RKCC), Kahvehn Petroleum Company, Molecular BioSciences, Golden Rainbow Energy Cooperative, Amalgamated Civil Engineering (ACivEng), and the Voltaire News Network (VNN, which comprises the franchises VNN24, VNN OpenNet, VNN Telecommunications and VNN Productions).

The formation of The Humanisternan Commonwealth in 2563 gave the VTC access to further states in which to relocate its corporations.

During the early 2570s, the VTC underwent another expansion phase seeking permission to buy corporations in a number of states across Golden Rainbow as well as acquisitions from Gamemaster Corporations.
In addition to this expansion, a number of new divisions were created including Northern Equinox Industrial Science and Research (NEISAR), General Mechanised Industries (GMI), Liberal Publications, Turing Computer Systems, Auricom Solutions, and the motor vehicle manufacturers Grathar and Voltaire Motor Company, Hybrid Commercial Vehicles and Kahvehn Machinen Werken. Expansion of the AquaMain division (previously only a single corporation) devoted to maintenance of water treatment installations also took place.

The Voltaire Trading Company is active in a number of areas, including heavy industry, and precision engineering, agriculture, chemicals, petroleum, electricity generation and government-related industries.

A major client of the Voltaire Trading Company is the Cooperative Republic of Kahveh. Other clients include corporations within the CRK and the Humanisternan Commonwealth.
