|Union of Arendale|
This article is part of the series:
There many and diverse political parties in Arendale. Most party memberships consists primarily of political figures and leaders, with little or no grassroots membership. Arendale has a multi-party system with numerous political parties, in which no one party often has a chance of gaining power alone, and parties must work with each other to form coalition governments for political expediency and convenience. Since no political parties have sustaining membership to which party leaders are developed, most of the political parties have the rise-and-fall-and-rise character.
Before the mid-31st century politics in the Union of Arendale was dominated by the Socials and Unionalists. These were not political parties in the modern sense but somewhat loose alliances of interests and individuals. The Socials included many of the leading aristocratic families committed to the Baptists succession, and later drew support from elements of the emerging industrial interests and wealthy merchants, while the Unionalists were associated with the landed gentry, the Church of Christ and the Roman Catholic.
By the mid 31st century the Unionalists had evolved into the Democractic Party, and the Socials had evolved into the Liberal Party. In the late 31st century the Liberal Party began to pursue more left wing policies, and many of the heirs of the Social tradition became Liberal Unionists and moved closer to the Democrats on many of the key issues of the time.
The Liberal and Democrats dominated the political scene until the 3020s, when the Liberal Party declined in popularity and suffered a long stream of resignations. It was replaced as the main anti-Unionalsits opposition party by the newly emerging Nationalists Party, who represented an alliance between the nationalistic and labour movement, organised trades unions and various socialists societies.
Since then the Democratic and Nationalist parties have dominated Dalean politics, and have alternated in government ever since.
Three parties dominate politics in the Legislature House. Each one operates throughout Arendale. Most of the Dalean Members of the Dalean Parliament and the Assembly represent one of these parties:
- Nationalist Party(132 seats in the House)
- Democratic Party(107 seats in the House)
- Rights Party(82 seats in the House)
- Federalists Party(62 seats in the House)
- Arendaleanista(Socialist) Party(42 seats in the House)
- Liberal Party(23 seats in the House)
