This article is about "Eastern Gaia". For the Mainland Gaia, see Gaia.
Eastern Gaia (Standard Gaian: 東部ガイア), officially the Special Region of Eastern Gaia, is a special region located on the planet of Kebir Blue on the southern coast of Austral Bergo, Centura Donna Continent. The territory is headed by Governor Executive Mika Yasumoto and is currently governed by the Social Democratic Party (Territorial), led by Chief Representative Jin Komatsu.
The capital of Eastern Gaia is Miyako, which is the second largest metropolitan area in Gaia. Eastern Gaia has an estimated population of 43,373,425, a large proportion of whom live on the coastal regions and in the Lake Kamagaya region.
Prior to the Gaian annexation, the territory was formally known as the Empire of Luna Moor. Even though the formal and official name of the territory was Luna Moor, many Gaians referred to it as Eastern Gaia, due to the large percentage of ethnic Gaians living near the border regions.
The government of Luna Moor had limited control over a majority of the regions that comprised the country, which were mostly governed by local governments. With the limited control, the government also neglected to improve or maintain much of the country's infrastructure system, severely hampering economic development.
By 3590, the western regions that bordered Gaia were under de facto control of the Gaian government, due to the signing of a stewardship treaty.
On March 12, 3623, Eastern Gaia was officially annexed by Gaia. The territory retained most of its autonomy, which was guaranteed by law for a period of 50 years. Since the annexation, Eastern Gaia has received tremendous sums of development aid from the national government. In 3625, electoral reforms in the Imperial Assembly brought Eastern Gaia more representation on the national level, with one-third of the seats now originating from the territory.
In 3673, the 50 year autonomy guarantee ended and Eastern Gaia became a Special Region, which allowed the territory to retain its autonomy in most matters.
On March 11, 3745, missiles fired by ships belonging to US Gamora stuck a Tadokoro Services facility in Eastern Gaia, leading to the deaths of 2686 people.
Eastern Gaia is located on the southeastern coast of Gaia, west of the Austral Bergonian section of the Centura Donna Alps, which is known as the Chiheisen Mountains in Gaia. Eastern Gaia is nearly twice the size of Mainland Gaia and contains a much more diverse range of landscapes.
Large portions of Eastern Gaia are covered with coniferous forests, from the territory's northern reaches to the many lakes of the territory's central watershed. Lake Kamagaya is a defining feature in Eastern Gaia, it and its watershed make up an approximately 40% of the region's landmass.
Eastern Gaia has a mild and rainy oceanic climate, mostly due to being located on the windward side Chiheisen Mountains. Regions near the foothills of the mountains, such as the Lake Kamagaya region, often see annual precipitation anywhere from 1000mm to 2000mm. The form of precipitation largely depends on the region and the time of the year. Most of the precipitation falls as snow during the winter months, and as rain during the rest of the year.
Temperatures across the territory are almost identical to those in Mainland Gaia. However, cooler temperatures prevail in the eastern highlands, which often dip to a chilly -20ºC. The coastal regions of Eastern Gaia enjoy milder temperatures, averaging at 16ºC annually.

Eastern Gaia is a special region of Gaia, which means it enjoys a high degree of autonomy. The territory enjoys expanded rights under the Local Governance Act and the Special Region Law, in all areas except defence and foreign affairs.
The territory has a unicameral legislature known as the Regional Assembly, which is headed by Eastern Gaia's head representative, the Chief Representative. The Regional Assembly is comprised of Representatives from the Special Administrative Regions that make up the territory. There are currently 100 Representatives in the Regional Assembly, who are directly elected by the residents of Eastern Gaia. The Chief Representative of Eastern Gaia is elected by the members of the Regional Assembly, and has to be approved by the Gaian government. The Governor Executive represents the will of the central government in Chukyo, and is responsible for approving legislation.
Voting rights are afforded to residents of Eastern Gaia who have lived in the territory for a period of five years or more, and are Gaian citizens or permanent residents.
There are currently four political parties represented in the Regional Assembly, most of which are affiliated with their national counterparts. They are given seats in the Regional Assembly through a system of proportional representation after an election.
The territory is governed by the Social Democratic Party of Eastern Gaia, under Chief Representative Jin Komatsu. The party works closely with the other political parties, as well as the Independents, to guide the territory towards economic prosperity and high standards of living.
Eastern Gaia currently has one-third of the seats available in the Imperial Assembly of Gaia.
The economy of Eastern Gaia is a developing economy for the most part. Prior to the annexation, unemployment rates were as high as 60% and much of the territory's infrastructure was in varying states of ruin. However, the economy has been gradually improving since the annexation, due to investment by the Gaian government.
The territory's economy is largely dominated by its industrial sector, which comprises of approximately 50% of Eastern Gaia's economy. A majority of corporations operating in Eastern Gaia are "charted corporations", which are state-owned entities that operate for profit. Since 3623, the economy has been generally growing, however, unstable world markets continue to pose a significant threat to the economic stability and growth of Eastern Gaia. Foreign investment, especially from federal allies, and domestic investment have since stabilized the economic situation. However, the unemployment rate is still on average higher than that of Mainland Gaia.
Eastern Gaia is a member of the UniSov World Trade Common Market and conducts approximately 40% of its trading within the common market. The corporate tax rate in Eastern Gaia is currently 5%, as opposed to 10% in the rest of Gaia.
Eastern Gaia's population is approximately 43,373,425, with the population increasing by approximately 0.9% annually. About 83% of Eastern Gaia's population are ethnic Gaians, with the majority of them living in the western and coastal portions of the territory. Austral Bergonians comprise 11% of the population, with the majority living in the Lake Kamagaya region and the northern highlands. About 3.6% of the population are Aquitanian. The remaining 2.4% consists of a variety of ethnic groups, largely from neighbouring countries, and various Pnakotic nations.
Refugees and immigrants account for a significant portion of Eastern Gaia's population. Since 3716, there has been approximately 1.4 million Aquitanian refugees living in Eastern Gaia, with a majority of them residing in the newly created Nyujima Special Prefecture in the south. Over two-thirds of refugees unusually obtain permanent residency status, which gives them a path to citizenship, while many also chose to return to their home countries.
Eastern Gaia's official language is Gaian. English and Aquitanian are de facto official languages, and have a special status within the territory. Bilingual and even trilingual signs are a common sight in Miyako and Nyujima, and other large cities.
Eastern Gaia's education system is largely modelled after that of the Gaian mainland. The curriculum taught in schools is determined by the Eastern Gaia Education Bureau, with general guidelines from the national Ministry of Education. Education is compulsory and fully subsidized at all levels.
The primary language of instruction in Eastern Gaia is Gaian, while English and Aquitanian are made available in some schools.
Eastern Gaia has a universal healthcare system similar to Gaia's. Residents in Eastern Gaia have access to mandatory national and regional health insurance coverage from the Gaian Ministry of Health and Welfare, and Eastern Gaian Health and Welfare Bureau. The healthcare system is primarily funded through contributions from the Gaian government and regional tax revenue. Eastern Gaia has a health index of 130.
